Decorating Bloggers...Are You Monetizing Your Blogs?

Hi Blogging Friends,

I haven't posted in almost a week, where did the time go? My husband took last week off of work and painted our kitchen, hooray! I hope to post pics this week, it looks great, I'm so glad it's done! He also COOKED, almost it was like *I* got a vacation, too!

It was nice to have him home and to have delicious home-cooked meals (that I didn't have to cook!)....ah!!! But now, back to reality today...I'll have to put my chef's hat back on tonight and whip up something tasty for my family, wish me luck ;)

I wanted to talk about 'monetizing' your blogs know, making money ;) I notice that many of the Decorating Blogs do not have any monetizing going, I just wanted to talk a little bit about things I have found out along the way...I am by no means an expert on any of this, but I know with the economy the way it is, everyone is looking to make some extra money here and there and since you have a blog, you have an awesome tool already to get you going!

Here are some of the companies that I work with:

Another popular one is BlogHer Ads, however, there is usually a waiting list, I have been on it for quite some time, I hope they contact me soon! (Update: I have been approved for BlogHer Ads and am quite happy to be working with them!)

Now, I am not getting rich by any means, but to me, it's 'free money', so why not tap into it? I love blogging anyway, so why not make some passive income doing it, I say! make the most bang for your buck, you need visitors and readers to come to your blog, right? Many of you have a regular group of what I call 'blogging friends', (because that is what you are to me), that visit your blog on a regular basis. But how do you attract more people to your blog? Here are a few things to try:

  • Twitter - If you are a blogger who is serious about expanding your blog, you *have* to be on twitter, it's that plain and simple. It is such a great way to network with other bloggers and let others know about your wonderful blog. When you sign up, make sure to Follow Me .

  • Entrecard - This is another way to market your blog and meet other bloggers. Make sure to add me as a favorite, too.

You can also read an article that I wrote at, "How to Have a Giveaway on Your Blog."

So, there are a few things to take a look at. If you have any questions, please post them and I will answer them (if I can) right here in the comments, so make sure to subscribe to them if you are interested in learning more.

I would also love to hear what you do to market your blog. Like I said, I am still learning, so let's learn and earn together!

If this topic of monetizing your blog is popular, I will have more posts like this in the future.

Thanks, Friends! And I hope you all have a great week!

Thanks for all of the tips. I've been thinking lately of giving up blogging because I don't get many viewers. I work full time, and just don't have the time to post something everyday. I'll join twitter, and see if that helps. Thanks for all the other tips too. I love your blog!

I finally started advertising. With the amount of blogging I am doing, I might as well get paid for it. :)

Thanks for the tips. I use google adsense and was waiting another month till I used BlogHer. I know that they require you to have your blog for at least 90 days. I didn't know that there was a waiting list though. Can I get on the list before the 90 days? I've heard of Twitter but don't know what it is for.

Hi, I can see that many of you are wondering what the heck twitter is all about...I wondered that same thing when I first heard about it.

Essentially, it is an Instant Messanging website, in real time, with MANY people. When you 'tweet', you must do so in 140 characters or less. You only see the tweets from people that you follow.

What I like about twitter is that I can connect with other bloggers, SAHM's, WAHM's, people from my state and things like that. People send in quick links to current events, links to their updated blogs, or even just whatever they are doing at the time or some funny thing to's just fun and it's a great way to network.

Just play around with it and you will get the hang of it. Make sure to post a link to your blog whenever you update your blog, too.

I love twitter, give it a try!

Great post! I'm not sure my blog is "monetize worthy" -- but it would be a hoot to make money off may random musings! :-) I'm going to bookmark this post...all very good info to have.

I love Project Wonderful. I don't make much money, but just enough to pay for my own advertising, so it's a win-win.

I am dying to start Twittering...Want to hear a stupid Twitter story? I sent the code via my phone and nothing happened. Several times. Finally I drove to the store where I got my phone and asked the guy "Why can't I Twitter?" He gave me a dumb look and asked, "What's that?" Ok, I'm 41 and he was about 25-ish. I figured if someone my age knows about Twitter, he should know what it is. Hmph. Still trying to start Twittering...

Meanwhile, as I wait for my (major player in the market - and not one listed as troublesome in the Twitter troubleshooting guide) cell phone technology to catch up with today's world, I'll dig into the other links you put in the post. Thanks!

Great tips. I'll have to check them out. Is Twitter like Facebook?

Hi Bella,
I was wondering about all that STUFF on bloggers side bars, that I personally don't care for it. I like to read about you and your ideas, see what projects you are working on, etc...I'm not fond of the advertising and how much do you really make?? I'm still learning about blogging too. I feel that it's like TV and it's just not my thing at this time. I don't even have cable. As they's your blog and you can do what you have fun. I hope you do let me know how much you make and I don't understand how you get paid.

I have wondered about this myself but did not know how to go about it. How do you earn this money? Sorry if this is a stupid question. I noticed places like nesting place etc doing this. cherry

Many of you are wondering how I get paid for the ads.

Most ads are paid by PayPal.

I think if you are worried about cluttering up your blog...and let's face it, we love beautiful things since we love to decorate, right? ;) Well, if this is an issue for you (as it was for me, too)...just play around with them and see if you like the look or not. You can always take things off of your blog, so it's really just something you can play around with and get it just right for your blog.

If you only want one thing, try BlogHer Ads. Most people I have heard from are pretty pleased with them and it's only one box on your blog. There is usually a waiting list though.

Or try the Logical Media one, those ads are usually pleasing to the eye and you actually have a choice of many ads to use for the same product, which is also nice.

With Google Adsense, it's sort of like a Love/Hate relationship, lol. Most days I make pennies, but then all of a sudden some days I will make $2-$4. The love/hate thing is you cannot request a payment until you hit $100. I have about $28 in my account after 2.5 months. So, like I said, you won't get rich, but why shouldn't we make a few bucks on our blogs, I say.

Make sure if you sign up with Twitter or Entrecard, that you let me know, so we can meet up there!

Thanks for all of the questions, keep them coming!

Bella, I wondered what happened to you! Glad you were having such a great week with your husband around. Can't wait to see the kitchen reveal. :)

You're so good at this blogging stuff. I've learned a LOT from you, and I'm glad you wrote this post to teach us all even more about monetizing. I had never heard of Project Wonderful. That's a new one to me. I'll check it out.

I hadn't heard of Entre Card until you told me about it. I still don't really understand it. Maybe you can write some posts with more details about each of these things in the future. Thanks! :-)

Great tips! I haven't heard of a few of these options, nor have I used them. I need to learn about this kind of stuff! I do private ads and they are great so far, but this is only my first month EVER with ads so can't speak from long term experience! I didn't have any ads the first year but decided just recently that the private ads were a win-win situation for me as well as the ones joining up with me.

Thanks for sharing!

Happy day,

It's funny... I've been at this blogging thing for so long that it's just natural for me to monetize my blogs.

Until I read this post - I had completely forgotten that some readers have a problem seeing ads on websites... which is just what a blog is.

If an ad is presented as a contest on a blog... I don't see any complaints. But, if an advertiser sponsors and ad instead of a prize it's a problem for some readers. Funny how that works.

So we all spend day after day, writing, researching and tweaking our blogs. I think it's wonderful to make a living doing just that.

If readers don't want to read my blogs because I have advertising... well... well... ummm... they can look for other blogs without ads.

Plus... I pay for ads on other sites so you can find me and all the ideas I share.

It's a big "web"... and their is room for all. :)

BTW... if you "work" at this blogging thing long enough, Google will start sending you nice fat checks once a month. Like "really, fat" checks. It's fun and amazing.

I also suggest Amazon to all new marketers. It's so easy to find the perfect product to suggest within the article you are writing. Pictures and text links are very simple to pop in when you use a Word Press blogging platform and an Amazon Plug-in.
