My Dining Room - All Dressed Up For Fall and WWYD?

Here's my Dining Room...it's plain jane-ish, but for the most part I can live with it...

I spiffed it up with my gold chargers and some plates...I read on Nester that if you leave chargers on your table that you will be less likely to treat it as a dumping ground...I sure hope it works because boy is this ever a dumping ground for me!

I also added 3 brown pumpkins to my cake plate...got those at the Dollar Tree, thanks for that tip, Susie Harris!

I'd also like to show you what I put on some of my plates, courtesy again of Susie Harris...these little homemade tags, aren't they sweet?

I got these 2 little mini vases at a garage sale the other day for $.50 each, I should have bought more, but at the time I didn't know what I was going to do with them...I <3 them!!!

Here's my chocolate brown carpet with some sort of leafy/floral design in it...I love it...although had I really thought it out, I probably should not have gotten carpet for a dining room, but hey this is Michigan and my feet get cold in the winter!

Here's my little round table in the corner...I hide crap under that tablecloth, but shhhhhhhhhh, don't tell anybody ;)

Now, here are my WWYD questions...The furniture, carpet, window treatments and chandelier are all staying...but I would love any advice you have on paint colors or even wallpaper, but I think I would rather paint. There is also a chair rail in here and some sort of design on the bottom...any suggestions for those are welcome, too.

The carpet is chocolate brown and so are the window treatments, the sheers are beige. The chandelier is an Euro sort of design and is sort of taupe, I guess, in color. Oh and any suggestions for my little table in the corner are appreciated, too! It needs help, lol.

Thanks!!!

Bella
PS: Is the chandelier too low??? I know it's not centered, lol, but that I have to live with for now...you know, my dh is an electrician, so nothing electrical ever gets done around our house ;)

Hi Bella,
First off I love the moldings below the chair rail! In fact, I think your dining room is lovely. You have a great room there you just need a little more personality in there. How about some artwork for the walls? Perhaps a nice large mirror, wall sconces, a cordell type shelf? Family photo grouping? White plate arrangement? Just a few ideas... And you could always add a bit of patterned home dec fabric to your panels as well as some trim although they are very pretty as they are. Then make a table runner to match... Truly it's a lovely room though.

I love the moldings! I would paint the top a rich color and add maybe a mirror or something along those lines. I love the glass pumpkins on the cake plate, I will be copying that idea for sure, thanks for the idea! Have a great weekend.

I love the design of your carpet. I have carpet in my formal dining area too. :)

It looks like there is wallpaper above the wainscoting. Is that correct? If so, it's not to bad, are you tired of it?

If you raise the chandelier by a few links I think that might look better.

Lastly, try adding color, color, color. You have an abundance of safe neutrals.
What color are the drapes exactly?
Go into your closet and find the articles that you feel the best in. What colors are they? A nice shade of green or red would be lovely.

Me again. I forgot to say that I agree that colorful artwork would do so much in the space.

Hi Bella,

Pull that green color from the fern tablecloth and try that on the upper walls..leave the bottom white but maybe do a pattern in the molding part...maybe a painted faux damask design? Also, add a mirror..they always add sparkle to any room and make it look bigger....I love the chandelier..you could always try changing out the shades on it for some color change...have you ever seen the beaded ones? Gorgeous! And, I loveeeee the little punkins..dollar tree? Who woulda thunk it?

Too funny!! Here you are debating whether to remove the wallpaper, and I just did a wall treatment using wallpaper that looks uncannily like yours! I will post a picture of it next week sometime, but I am pretty sure they are almost identical!!

I really like your room...

Hi Bella,
I think you have a beautiful dining room. You have some great suggestions in the posts above.

I've seen some great things done with plates on the walls. On Rhoda's blog, and Kimba's too. I don't know how to direct you to the exact post, but they are there cause I've looked at them. LOL
Have a wonderful day,

Hi Bella! your dining room is beautiful. I love the pumpkins and I'm on my way to the Dollar Tree once I finish this comment. I'm for painting the dinning room, I don't have any color suggestions, I just want to say to consider a paint that will go great with the Christmas decorations too.Deb

Hi Bella,

I just had to leave a quick comment about the chandelier. One of the most common mistakes made with a chandelier is that it is hung too high. The rule of thumb is to hang a chandelier about 30" from table to bottom of fixture. Most tables about 30" tall so the fixture is about 60" off of the floor. Adjust to suit yourself. Most times when I go into a home and there is a complaint about the dining room chandelier all it takes is a little tweaking with the height adjustment.

Love your chargers! I'm trying to hold off getting all of my pumpkins out, but.......

Connie said...

I agree with Rae's comment above. It can't be too high or it looks like a department store. Her suggestion was right on. I love the glow and coziness of the room also. Paint the wall a pale color of the hue you like. What colors do you have in that room? Hide whatever you like under the table; I do that allll the time, chickadee!! However, if it's just you, hubs and 2 kiddos I'd take the leaves out of the table for everyday and that would give you much more room in there. You really don't have to have leaves in a table just because you HAVE them. Stick them away in a closet for company. But it's really a lovely room, my sweet chickee.....
Smoochies,
Connie

Boo hoo! We didn't have any of those pumpkins at our Dollar Tree. I'm hoping that they're just holding off until the season is a little closer. However I did see a few things for Thanksgiving. I'll keep checking back. Deb

Hi Bella! yes, I'm back not that I went anywhere but you know I was trapped into my home by inlaws. I really like your dining room and I was lol at your electrician husband comment. I hear you on that one. My husband is in landscaping and do we have any..? Nope! ...sigh.. they do work hard, though it tends to be on other's homes. I love the molding below on your walls, I would love to add some, someday to our dining room. I also love wallpaper and my husband so far has put his foot down (the only thing) b/c we spent a nice fortune on having our walls "old-world" textured. But I have seen some that I cry over, they are so beautiful. Since yours are already done, would you consider recovering them again? I can't tell what the pattern is on yours now but I get the idea you are a wee bit tired of it. But that way with the lower molding, a beautiful rich wallpaper would be stunning and you would only have to do half walls! Before you rule it out, go take a look at the homecenters wall paper books, you might find something you love and it would give you a starting point to work off of. I always need something first and typically mine is fabric. Or you could skip the wallpaper idea (boo hoo, want you to do it b/c I can't!) and find a fabric maybe to recover your chair seats in..? that's easy to do and gives a great kick of color and then you could go from there. Your furniture is beautiful so you've got a great start. A pretty lamp on that round table in the corner and maybe one of those tier servers might be nice too on there. Well good luck and post when you find something!

Bella,
I love your dining room. I think you have done a great job with the table (hope the Dollar Tree in Alabama has those pumpkins)! The decorative workings below the chair rail is beautiful...I think you just need some pictures on the wall...chandalier is NOT too low.
I'll be visiting you again!

love the dining room and the tags, I saw the same idea re the chargers and was wondering if it would work, we sure need it round here lol!

you are so lucky to have that beading on the walls, it's gorgeous! I think I'd leave that the same colour as it is and then top with something deeper and how about a huge mirror for some light and reflection, oh yeah and as someone else said a lamp in the corner

i like the chandelier low and wouldn't change it, I think they look awful up too high

I love the way you decorated it. Its simple, but makes a great statement!

Ok, and I totally have to go get those pumpkins now! you and susie have convinced me! hehehe

You found those Dollar Tree pumpkins!!! I looked, but my local store didn't have any. I may try the bigger one in Jax another day. I love they way your dining room looks. I like the wallpaper! I think I'd just hang something on the walls... I'm a big fan of plates, myself! :o)

For color on the walls I think you should try to find a reddish-orange color (turkey red?). It would compliment the brown carpeting and drapes well. I also think throwing some glossy black accents in the room with that color would look nice. Perhaps paint the moulding on the walls glossy black? Just an idea! Definitely hang a mirror somewhere to make the room appear bigger. Have fun!

Could you move your china cabinet to the opposite wall? If you did, you could move your table a little to the left (towards where the cabinet is now) and it would be centered under the light.

A mirror or some artwork on the walls and how about a soft sage green paint for the walls above the rails.

Your table is beautiful - I love the carving on the corners.

Bella~ That is my chihuahua's name~ I love it~ Okay~ We are going to dove into it~Step by step...The window treatments are what color/pattern? The carpet is choc...I see you have chosen gold chargers....and the tags are french inspired....The table is wood...are you leaving it that way or painting? The wallpaper~ If you go with wallpaper I would look for faux finishes or french/old world inspired pattern and designs....In a warm golden hues to compliment the choc...Get a sample and tack it up there...and live with it for a week or so....The wainscotting...If you want you can paint it or add a glaze...I think if you go with a wallpaper you should leave it be...We don't want to make it busy...If you paint the walls...I'd still go with a golden hue..One of my favorite colors is Earthy Oacher by Pittsburgh Paint...I think Lowe's has it too...You can have any paint store configure it for you...anyway if you paint the wall with no faux, pattern, etc you can have fun with the wainscotting....You could paint inside the molding...a color or a pattern...A stripe...in the same color reversing matte with gloss...would be cute....or a harlequin...You could colorwash in there as well....Or add a medallion(i think that is how you spell it)or a applique....and paint, distress or crackle it and the trim around the inset if you like....Id like to see a lamp on that corner table...and a new topper in the fabric that will accent your new room...If you paint the table, chairs or either...Go with cream, black or red...Or stain it in a dark old world stain....I have a class starting today! Come over and attend! Love,Screaming Meme

PS If you want other ideas because that is not anything that appeals to you,let me know...There are million other ways to design that room.....

Your dining room has amazing character...you just need a few small touches to finish it! By painting the top of the walls a rich red, or even sponging it in a combination of creamy tans and mochas, you can bring warmth to the room. I LOVE the color and crown molding of the bottom half of the room. Punch up your beautiful table by adding touches of red, like napkins and candles.... A big mirror on the wall would add richness, and you can twist a fall garland aroung the bottom of your chandelier. Great start! I love your room!!!

Thanks, JoJo! I would love a long mirror on that empty wall. You have great ideas!
