WWYD? (Glorified Mud Room) SHOES!!!

This is the other side of our Family Room. That brown door goes to the garage. This is where we enter our home from, where our keys go, where our shoes and coats drop...some more hap-hazardly than others...

I bought that Pottery Barn knock-off storage bench and shelf from last year thinking it would solve all of my problems,,,um does help and I do like that I can decorate the shelf...

...but the baskets on the bottom are really too small to store alot of shoes in, so other 'crap' seems to accumulate in them instead..or if I do put shoes in them, they are never to be worn again...out of sight, out of mind, I guess. The one idea I do have for it, though, is to spray paint the wicker baskets either a red tone to match the wood, or a green or black to contrast...I think the natural color of them sticks out too much.

The shoe holder thingee we have had for years, it's functional but an eyesore...and I have to put all of the shoes on there, none of my little or big men do this on their own.

The big basket, I just picked up at Big Lots out of desperation, really. I know it doesn't look that hot, but I was tired of looking at all of those shoes all over the floor.

Don't worry about the magazines, I can find a home for them, or recycle/freecycle them :)

So...what do you do with shoes? Do you have any advice for me? I surely do need it!!! Thanks so much, my blogging friends :)

Well, when you figure out the show challenge please, please let me know...we have more shoes in the back hallway than a shoe store!

It looks good...I am constantly having my daughter take shoes to her room cause she just kicks them off when she walks in the door. The other day just outside the back door I counted 14 pairs of shoes between the three of us...good grief!!

Hi Bella, in my daughter's room there's a regular book shelf we use it for shoes that won't fit in the closet,I made a curtain for it as not to show off the shoes but it is in her room. Here we don't have a mudroom and if I did have one I would probably not store shoes there. We just clean our shoes before we come into the house, if they are dirty, and put our shoes away in our own closets. Now that's concealing. Deb

Oh! I forgot to say that your room is decorated beautifully!, and I love the idea you have for the baskets on the shelf, but they're not an eye sore the way that they are. Deb

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

I'm thinking the mags should go in the baskets under the bench, and that shoes should go in a big basket like that one next to the bench. I agree with the comment that the others should go in your closets. I had the same problem of shoes gathering about the house. I let myself have 3 pair at the door, the rest go in the closet, and if there's *still*'s time to let go. :-)

Hi Bella,
Everything looks great. Love the shelf and the baskets.

As far as the shoes, if you really need to keep them there, what some type of screen to hide them? Like a screen made of old shutters or doors?
They would still be handy and easy to get to, but out of sight.
Have a great day,

Hi Bella,

I have a wire shelf thing in my garage next to the door into the house. Most of the time the kids kick them off in the house and I place them in the garage. I need to have a talk with them about that. I really like your accessories on top of the shelf. Cute stars.

I like the idea of the magazines in the baskets...and limiting the amounts of shoes at the door...why didn't I think of that? lol

Deb, you are soooo good...not having any shoes at the entry way...that's discipline!

I also like the idea of the shoes in the garage...I actually bought a HUGE dresser looking thing that stores it just sits out there and things accumulate on top of it...ergh! The shoes inside? Who knows...what's in there, again, out of sight, out of mind. I like the idea of the open shelves out there, that would have worked better, but I wanted something to 'hide' them and for some reason it just ain't working for us.

Thanks everyone, keep the ideas coming, I'm listening :)

PS: Am I the only woman in America who couldn't care less about shoes? I would much rather buy something for my house than myself, anyone else?

I'm that way too. My husband actually owns more shoes than I do because I'd rather spend my money on something cute for my house.
As for the shoes, we don't have the "take off your shoes" rule at our house. But I do remember seeing a cute thing on HGTV Decorating Cents where they screwed a stack of inexpensive mailboxes together as a shoe storage.

Hi Bella - thanks for stopping by and entering my giveaways! Like some of the others, I would suggest creating your mudroom in the garage - just before you come in. Get a bench or a trunk that has storage inside, so people can sit on it and take their shoes off. Inside the trunk you can store mittens, scarves, etc. if you live in cold weather. Put up some pegs for coats, backpacks, umbrellas, etc. Get some stackable shoe racks for shoes and periodically have everyone take an armload back to their own closet. And then none of it has to show up in your house and you get to put fun stuff there! I'd like to invite your friends to stop by to win some organizing books and my downloadable Hassle Free Dinners: :-) - Bev

Hi Bella!
Thanks for coming by to visit me! I really like your blog and you have a lovely home. I think the idea with the cabinets being turned around is great. You can always back them with something like the beadboard like we did. I would have loved black kitchen cabinets but we needed to lighten up our kitchen. We had dark wood and got tired of the dark depressing look we got from them so we painted them cream color and I antiqued them.
I really think you need more on your fireplace mantel. Maybe a collection of books using other books laying down at each end as bookends. With an interesting large plate on a stand or something at that end also. Your hearth needs some more interest at the left end also, maybe a long large basket with small logs for looks, or a piece of garden statuary or a couple large urns of varied sizes with a dried arrangement or curly willow in them. Do you like Cranberry as an accent color? You could paint your organizing baskets cranberry and use that color for your fireplace accents to tie the two sides of the room together. I like the idea of the organization being in the garage, then you could use a long chest of some type on your organization wall for games and maybe the hats & mittens you don't want in the garage. You could find a piece like that at a garage sale and paint it.
How about more of the cream tin pieces on the iron railing? You could scatter a collection of things in that same color tone, cream & black that would make it look absolutely fabulous! You're on the right track girl!!
You did a great job on your chair seats, love the fabric and color. It's amazing to me what a little new fabric can do for a piece!
Well you probably didn't want a book did you?? My husband (just passing by) said I sounded to bossy. I sure didn't mean to be, I'm just excited when I see such wonderful potential! You're doing a wonderful job Bella!!
Big Hugs, Sherry

I love the pottery barn knock offs, don't you? I like the idea of painting the baskets. I love red, it's a great addition to just about any room of your home. It would really make an impact. As far as the shoes, well, I just don't know what to tell you. I have a husband, a 5 year old son, and another son that will be doing it before long, and they leave their shoes everywhere!! I just gave up....

I wish I had a mudroom, or at least something close to it! my house opens up to the grand family room right in the entry, nothing! I love your pottery barn knock off...I really need one of these! I saw somthing similar to the bench at IKEA, but I want the shelf part at the top!

Hey Bella,

You're bed is exactly the look I'll probably go for in my guest room. Thanks for pointing that out :) As for your shoe problem, no suggestions here girl...we've got the same issue. But, I totally love your PB knockoff furniture, and I do think the baskets would look nice painted. Red?

Bella, I don't have any suggestions, LOL!...but did want to say that I love your shelf and bench! The shelf is decorated so beautifully! I think you are too hard on yourself...your house really is very pretty and you have a great idea for decor! :)

I long for a mud room. And a laundry room. :o)

Anyway... I think what you have going on is very, very nice! I am looking for a bench with baskets like that for my loft, as a matter of fact! But what do I do about shoes? I have a closet by the front door that my kids put their shoes in. In the closet I have a big basket they throw them in. And actually, we rarely use that anymore since most of the time we come in the house through the garage and shoes get worn upstairs and put away in their room closets.

Oh... and I agree with Rhonda. You ARE too hard on yourself. I think you have great style!!

Thanks, Rhonda and Marie, yes, I am most own worse critic...for sure! You're both so sweet, thank you :) Bella

I'm organized to a fault. Many would even say "borderline OCD". But, I've finally come to terms with shoes and decided to let them win. My husband and I each have our own closets, yet I'm always the one to actually put things in both of them. And, I just toss the shoes on the floor.

Oh, man. What a great room! I love all that brick! Here is my opinion(s). I agree that since you don't have a closet designated for those things, you need to make everyone take their stuff off in the garage. It might be tricky at first, but everyone will get used to it. Basically, your mudroom is outside--not a big deal. However, if you still want some things inside, I would just opt for a larger bench. Can your husband (or you!) just make a really large bench? You've got such a great wall there, just go bigger! Make some cushions for the top, and it's basically extra seating for the room. You could still have the baskets in the bottom (or drawers, if you're handy), and it would be great storage AND more seating. Heck, you could even find a contracter and have them build it. A lot of people think they don't do small jobs, but they do--for a more reasonable price than you may think. Either way, you've got a great wall there, and I would utilize it more. Shoes outside for now! Good luck and thanks for letting us have opinions on this stuff.
